Three people have pleaded guilty in federal court in East St. Louis to taking part in a fraudulent tax scheme. 38 year old Angenita M. Smith, 36 year old Tammy M. Smith both of Alton, and 32 year old Julieanna Hughes of St. Louis, entered a guilty plea to a count of filing a false federal income tax return. They could each face up to three years in prison.
In addition, the U.S. Attorney's Office also reports both Alton women also pleaded guilty to making false statements to an IRS agent, and a conspiracy charge against the IRS. Both of those could mean an additional 10 years in prison for each woman. Federal prosecutors say those charged were employed by Masters Touch Cleaning Service based in Missouri, and that the Smith's provided friends and relatives with false federal tax returns in order to receive false federal tax refunds. Five other individuals have also been charged in connection with the case.
