What were you doing at age 5? It probably was nothing philanthropic, was it? A 5-year-old from Jacksonville is gaining recognition for a sock collection drive which has netted 1,200 pairs – and counting.

Why? “So their feet can be warm,” Kellon Oldenettel answers.

His mother, Lori Oldenettel, nominated him for a Hasbro Community Action Hero award, and he was one of the six winners. Mother and son took a trip to New York, where Kellon picked up a $1,000 scholarship.

Kellon is already setting an example; his mother says her youngest son, age 2, now wants to collect books for kids who don’t have them.
