Edwardsville Garden Club: History and Use of Herbs - Saturday October 10, 2026 - 12PM

Saturday October 10, 2026  12PM

Location: Glen Carbon Senior Center, 157 N. Main, Glen Carbon, IL 62034

Program: Bruce Chalker of the St. Louis Herb Society will discuss the historical uses of herbs. Our Annual Herb Potluck Luncheon will also be held during the meeting.

The connection between humans and plants for flavor and medicine dates from the far past, of which there is ample evidence from various sources: written documents, preserved monuments, and even original plant medicines. Today, people still use herbs in cooking, natural wellness supplements, and modern medicines derived from plant compounds. Are you interested in learning more about the history of herbs and the various ways they have been used?

The October 2026 meeting of the Edwardsville Garden Club will feature a presentation by Bruce Chalker, from The St. Louis Herb Society. He will give a presentation on the history and uses of herbs.

From the St. Louis Herb Society website: "The mission of The St. Louis Herb Society is to further the study, use and knowledge of herbs. We pursue our mission by working in partnership with horticultural staff at the Missouri Botanical Garden to plan, plant and maintain the herb garden behind Tower Grove House. Hundreds of visitors pass through the herb garden annually to learn about herbs and enjoy its beauty. In addition to working in the herb garden, we offer classes, cooking demonstrations, an herb sale, a speaker’s bureau, create delightful herbal products and write publications"
