The Roxana Shells jumped out to a 14-0 lead thanks to a pair of scores from Blake Vandiver and took a 14-7 lead into the halftime break. But the Hillsboro Hilltoppers didn't back down in the second half as quarterback Matt Tomazzoli orchestrated a late touchdown drive that would tie the game with just 3:30 remaining in regulation. The score after four quarters of play was 14-14. The Hilltoppers and Shells exchanged touchdowns during the first overtime period to make the score 21-21. But only one team would score in the second overtime period.

Hillsboro takes the lead

Hillsboro stopped Roxana on their second overtime posession to claim the 27-21 win. Roxana falls to 0-3 and will try to get their first win on the road next week in Vandalia.

The second game of our double header took us to Bethalto where the Breese Mater Dei Knights beat the Civic Memorial Eagles 27-7. Knights quarterback Sam Toennies was the standout performer of the game, rushing for more than 100 yards with a pair of touchdowns in the win.

The Eagles fall to 1-2 on the season and will open MVC play next week against Triad.

Elsewhere, Brandon Kizer scored five times and Kareem Hamilton added three touchdowns as the Marquette Explorers edged Mt. Olive 48-40. The Explorers improve to 1-0 in Prairie State Conference play and are 1-2 overall. They host Kincaid-South Fork next week. Elsewhere, it was East Alton-Wood River edged Wesclin 20-13 and O"Fallon beat Alton 21-7.
