The Alton Redbirds needed a win to secure their spot in the IHSA Class 7A playoffs, but they couldn't overcome an early deficit against Belleville West last night. The Maroons returned a fumble for a touchdown in the 1st quarter and running back Brian Hill scampered for an 81 yard touchdown in the 2nd quarter to give Belleville West a 14-0 halftime lead.
Alton came out of the break looking to get back into the game and that's what they did on their first drive of the second half.
Young puts Alton on the Board
The touchdown cut the Maroons lead to 14-7 but momentum quickly swung back to the visitors as Hill broke free for a 67 yard touchdown on the following possession. Alton would lose running backs Keshon Young and Justice Pedrero to injuries in the 4th quarter and the Maroons would add a field goal to make the final score 24-7 in favor of the visitors. Belleville West finishes the year 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the Southwestern Conference. The Redbirds finish 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the SWC.
