Alton Post 126 won the District 22 North Division title last night at Gordon Moore Park. Alton crushed Highland Post 439, 18-0 in a seven-inning game to advance to the Fifth Division tournament for the fifth time in the last six years. The Fifth Division tourney will be held next week in Pinckneyville.
Alton improves to 21-11 – winning for the 12th time in their last 13 games. Highland ends the year at 20-12.
Alton starting pitcher Mike Sabatino was the recipient of the offensive outburst last night – 18 runs on 20 hits. He worked all seven innings – allowing only two hits – he walked one and struck out nine.
On to the offense, Post 126 got four RBI each from Luke Edwards and Jordan Bodenbach. Matt Halliday added three runs batted in. Jason Roberts had four hits and three runs scored. (Roberts was 4-4 with 2 RBI)
Meanwhile in the District 22 South Division tournament in Belleville…..Freeburg-Smithton pulled off another upset – beating top-seeded Fairview Heights, 5-1. (Freeburg eliminated Belleville Tuesday, 5-2)
Tonight – the South Division title game will feature a rematch between Fairview and Freeburg at 7 pm.
The winner (will join Alton) advances to the fifth division tourney next week in Pinckneyville.
In the District 20 tournament – host Jerseyville stopped top-seeded Eldred, 13-3 on Wednesday. Jerseyville Post 492 now stands at 12-17 on the season.
