Wilbur D. Greeling, 92, died at 5:45 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013 in Alton. Born May 24, 1920 in Godfrey, he was the son of Charles and Anna (Selmire) Greeling. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater and was a member of the VFW Post 1308. He retired from Lynn Tractor Company in Alton. He always enjoyed working on tractors after his retirement. On May 29, 1942, he married the former Fern Belk in Jerseyville. She preceded him in death on December 28, 2000.
Surviving are six children, John Greeling of Jacksonville, IL, Donald Greeling (Veronica) of Brighton, Ronnie Greeling (Verdie) of Brighton, Roger Greeling (Lisa) of Brighton, Larry Greeling (Patty) of Godfrey, and Rita Heiens of Alton, nine grandchildren, Michael, Brian, Darin and Jason Greeling, Kara Fergus, Tanya Scifres, Leslie Adams, Adam and Melissa Heiens, 18 great grandchildren, Lindsey, Tanner, Madison, Hannah, Brandon, Chandler, Cooper, Zoe, Emma, Carter, Caleb, Brady, Maya, Cameron, Brody, Isaiah, Alivia, and Coren, one brother, Allen Greeling (Alice) of Bunker Hill, and a special friend, Betty Werts of Brighton.
Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a grand-daughter, Jessica Aleah, a great grand-daughter, Evelyn Marie, two brothers, Dallas and Marion Greeling and a sister, Anna Vahle.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Reverend Andre’ Dobson will officiate.
Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.
