Matthew Campbell, 57, passed away at 5:40 a.m., Friday, January 5, 2024 at Bria of Alton following an accident and lengthy hospitalization. What a glorious day for Matt when he woke up in heaven, face to face with Jesus his savior, reunited with many of his loved ones, a man forgiven and made whole, free of pain and suffering.
He was born on November 21, 1966, in Jerseyville, Illinois and was the son of the late Darrell William and Mary Jane (Blasa) Campbell.
Matt grew up in Jersey County and was a 1985 graduate of Jersey Community High School, where he excelled at wrestling and was one of “The Ranchers”.
He was employed in the construction field, working for many years as a Union Laborer.
He married the former Jill Angel in 1993 and together they were the proud parents of a son, Samuel William.
Matt was a man of Faith, and valued his family. He and his former wife, Jill, coached their son Sammy’s soccer team for several years at the Jerseyville Park and Recreation Department, taking first place on two occasions.
He later married the former Michelle Meyer in 2005 and together their union blessed them with two children, Hunter and Addison.
Matt was blessed with a creative and artistic spirit, and honed in on those traits through the many hobbies he took interest in throughout his life. He was a lover of music and a big fan of Casting Crowns, a collector of many things and loved to cook. His ’55 Chevy that he and his dad worked on together was one of his proudest projects, and he enjoyed attending Super Chevy Shows with his friends.
Matt was a dreamer and always had big ideas, all of which he carefully developed a vision to fulfill. He never met a stranger and could talk to anyone, always having a story to share and never telling that story the same way twice!
He had a big heart, full of love and care for others, and proudly wore his heart on his sleeve. He will be sadly missed by his many family and friends here on this earth.
Surviving are three children, Hunter and Addison Campbell of Dow, Illinois and Elijah Owens of Muncie, Indiana; two brothers and a sister in-law, David and Arlene Campbell of Jenison, Michigan and Jeffrey Campbell of Elk City, Oklahoma; his lifelong dear friend, Daniel Beiser; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Samuel William Campbell on January 13, 2013; his parents, Darrell “Bill” Campbell on June 27, 2019 and Mary Jane Campbell of August 6, 2021; a brother, Joshua Campbell on October 4, 1998; paternal grandparents, Raymond and Sadie Campbell and maternal grandparents, Jasper and Hilda Blasa.
The family is grateful for all of the love and support that has been shown to Matt and to their family.
A Celebration of his wonderful life will be held from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, March 30, 2024 at the Jerseyville American Legion.
