Mary Nappier

Mary Ellen Nappier, 96, passed away Friday, May 8, 2015 at Alton Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 22, 1918 in Miami, Okla., she was the daughter of William Brown and Mary (Matteson) Plannett.

She married Robert Nappier June 3, 1939 in Marshall Town, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on Apr. 1, 1986.

Mary was a bowler well into her 80’s, and she also loved fishing.  She also enjoyed crocheting and quilting, making cherry pies, and writing poetry and short stories, one of which was published.  She had over 2000 hours of volunteer time as a Pink Lady at Alton Memorial Hospital, and was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include a daughter, Joanne (David) Welch of Bethalto; two sons, Jerry Nappier of Houston, Tex. and Dennis E. (Kim) Nappier of Newport Richey, Fla.; grandchildren, Bob (Jan) Nappier, Jeff Nappier, Scott (T.J.) Nappier, Jodi (Eric) Carpenter, Craig (Denise) Welch, Shawn (Doug) Pashea, Valarie and Justin Nappier, Jennifer (Anson) Anglin, and Justin Gerald Nappier; great grandchildren Katie, Jason, Jaidyn, Keagan, Brian (Katie), Daniel (Alexis) Tricia, Brandon, Lauren, Emily and Darren; and 2 great-great grandchildren, Bethany and Lane.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert William Nappier; a brother, J.M. Plannett; her parents; and her stepmother, Bertha Plannett.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 12 at Paynic Home for Funerals, where Pastor Charles West will officiate services at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 13.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital.
