Joseph W. Gentry, 88, died Thursday, January 7, 2016 at his residence. He was born June 30, 1927 in Loami, Illinois the son of the late Joseph C. and Beulah (Disney) Gentry. He served in the Army during WWII and retired as a ladle crane operator for Laclede Steel in 1987 after 36 years of service. On May 18, 1957 in Alton he married Norma Jean Myers and she preceded him in death on March 10, 1978. Surviving are one daughter, Janet Gentry and her partner Tammy Marsh of Alton and two sons, David Gentry (Carol) of Godfrey and Daniel Gentry (Lisa) of Godfrey, two grandchildren, Rhianon King of Pontoon Beach and Jamie Gentry of Ft. Collins, CO. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Orville Gentry and three sisters, Rosemary Baker, Mary Kathryn Wilson and Dorothy Gentry. Visitation will be from 1:00 -3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home with Reverend Steve Rice to officiate. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with full military honors by Alton VFW Post 1308. Memorials may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Association or the 5 A’s.
