Helen Louise Claxton, 86, of East Alton passed away peacefully Monday, January 4, 2016 at her home.  She was born August 6, 1929 in Alton to Joseph Henry and Teresa (Balke) Spurgeon.  She married Joseph William Claxton, Sr. on June 25, 1949 in Bethalto, and they shared 66 years of marriage together.  She worked 25 years at Owens-Illinois Glass and later at Walmart and Famous Barr.  Her greatest joy in life was being a grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Claxton, Sr. of East Alton; a daughter, Carolyn Susan (Neil) Hawkins of Alton; a son, Joseph William Claxton, Jr. of East Alton; six grandchildren, Joseph, Tanor (Heather), Joshua and Tyler Claxton, Jennifer (Jeremy) Dunham, and Benjamin (Jessica) Hawkins; one great grandchild, Jaxon Dunham; two brothers, William (Barbara) Spurgeon of Florissant, MO and Thomas (Linda) Spurgeon of Bethalto; and two sisters, Jean Auten of Jerseyville and Rose (Ron) Beiermann of Bethalto.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Joseph and John Spurgeon; and a sister, Leona Hohnsbehn.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Paynic Home for Funerals in East Alton from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11:30 a.m.  Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton.  Memorials can be made to St. Anthony’s Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association.  Online guestbook available at www.paynicfh.com
