Gregory F. Mitchell passed from mortality into immortality at 6:20 a.m. Thursday,March 31, 2016, at St. Louis University Hospital. Born June 7, 1952 in Alton to the late NaomiR. (Mitchell) McKamie and Elmo Campbell, Sr., Gregory received his formal education inAlton, graduating from Alton Senior High in 1970. He was employed at Mississippi Lime Co.in Alton for several years before enlisting in the U.S. Army as an Operating Room Specialistfrom 1974 - 1982 earning the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6). Upon his discharge from the Army,Greg resided Brooklyn, NY until returning to Alton in 1991 to be closer to family.Mr. Mitchell was a faithful and active member of Open Door Fellowship, 929 Milnor St.in Alton, where he served in a number of capacities, including their community food pantry.Greg was especially appreciated for his vibrant, welcoming, and supportive personality and mostespecially for the infectious enthusiasm he brought to what he described as his "ministry" ofassisting the elderly, poor, and needy in his church and community, and especially in theneighborhood around Open Door Fellowship.In addition to service at his church, Gregory provided several years of devoted service atthe "Soup's On" Tuesday group soup kitchen, held at First Presbyterian Church in Alton. His co-volunteers tell of how he often led prayer there, and how he would entertain them by singingduring their food service preparations. Greg will always be remembered as a devoted neighborand friend, and as a loving and supportive son, father, uncle, cousin, and brother.Mr. Mitchell is survived by one daughter, Naomi Mitchell of Laurel, MD; twogranddaughters, Patricia and Keyona Dent, and one grandson, Jordan Dent, all of Laurel, MD;two brothers, Stephen D. Mitchell of Alton and Terry (Annette) Campbell of Wildomar, CA ;two sisters, Denise Campbell of Alton and Cynthia (Campbell) Webb of Godfrey ; two aunts,Visitation will be held  Friday April 8, 2016 from 5:00 P.M. until time of service at 7:00 P.M. atTabernacle Missionary Baptist Church 2621 Amelia Alton, Illinois 62002Burial will take place Monday April 11, 2016 at Upper Alton Cemetery
