Gerald “Buck” Hamer, 92, died peacefully at 4:36 am Sunday December 22, 2013 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton, IL.

He was born April 14, 1921 in Alton the son of Isaac & Lydia (Rain) Hamer. 

He married the former Elaine Hope on December 5, 1942 in San Diego, CA.  She survives.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945.  He was Quarter Master First Class on the mine sweeper #144 for two years of his service.  He was a life time member of Elm Street Presbyterian Church and life time member of VFW Post 1308.

After his naval service he joined his brother as a partner at the I.C. Hamer food market which was founded by their father and worked there until he retired in 1975.

He is survived by a son and daughter and son-in-law, Gary & Carol (Willings) Hamer of Godfrey; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet & John Renick of Alton; a grandson and wife, Jason (Amber) Hamer of Chicago; a granddaughter, Hadleigh Renick of Godfrey; one great grandson, Caden Hamer, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother Lloyd “Bud” Hamer and a sister, Helen Walters.

Visitation will be from 11 am until time of memorial service at 12 pm Saturday December 28, 2013 Elm Street Presbyterian Church, 101 W. Elm Street in Alton, IL

Private inurnment will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.

Memorials may be made to Elm Street Presbyterian Church.
