Dorothy Shaw, 79 departed this life Friday, July 17, 2015 at 8:40 a.m. at University Nursing and Rehab Center in Edwardsville.
Dorothy Eleanor Young was born July 9, 1936 in Muskegon, Michigan to the union of the late Charles E. and Helen (Jacobs) Young, Jr.
She attended and graduated from Alton Senior High School. After graduation, Dorothy graduated from Cosmetology school and was a cosmetologist doing hair her home.
On October 19, 1958, the former Ms. Young married the late Joseph Edward Shaw at St. John Baptist Church. She professed a hope in Christ at an early age. Sister Shaw was a faithful member and usher at St. John Missionary Baptist Church under the late Rev. T. P. Wright. She later moved her membership to Lead the Way Church under Rev. Edwin Coleman.
Mrs. Shaw was employed: St. Joseph Hospital, Alton Memorial Hospital, Miller and Son Beauty Supply, and a foster grandparent for Alton School District. She served her community: National Council of Negro Women, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Red Hat Ladies Club, and Alton Wood River District Association.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Crystal Nicole Shaw; a brother, Calvin Young, Sr.; grandmother, Addie Chandler; and an uncle, Edward Jacobs.
Left to celebrate her legacy: 2 daughters, Salena Shaw and Lisa Woods both of Alton; a brother, Robert L. Young of Edwardsville; 3 sisters, Helen (Jospeh)Carter of Flint, MI, Opal Morris and Flora(Carl)Crummer all of Alton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will convene Thursday, July 23, 2015 from 9 until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at Deliverance Temple Complex Church of God in Christ. Interment will follow at Valhalla Cemetery. Elder Marcus A. Harrison will officiate.
