Dorothy Cummings

Dorothy Norma Cummings, 93, died at 7:34 a.m., Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Willowbrook in Savoy.

Dorothy was born in Brantwood, North Dakota on Nov. 3, 1921, the daughter of Fred & Harda (Stokke) Mowrey.

The family eventually moved to Kane, where she attended schools and graduated from Kane High School in 1939.

Dorothy married Roy Neal Cummings, also from Kane, in 1943, and during World War II, she was able to travel with Roy, who was enlisted with the US Navy as a bomber mechanic, as he was mainly stationed stateside.  After the war, Dorothy and Roy settled in Hardin until 1954, when they moved to Champaign.  Roy worked for the federal government as an instructor at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, and Dorothy held various jobs during her adult life, including waitressing, and then night manager at the Chuck Wagon Diner in Champaign, and  her final employment doing administrative work at the University of Illinois.  

Early after retirement, Roy & Dorothy moved to Ogden, Utah for three years while he was employed as a civil engineer, then after complete retirement they returned back to Champaign, with Roy passing away in 1992 after nearly 50 years of marriage.

Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family & friends and enjoyed playing cards (mainly Canasta with her mother & sister), bowling and golf, which she played into her eighties.

Surviving are her five children & their spouses, Ray & Mary Cummings of Pesotum, Kay & Max Schlueter of Northfield Falls, Vt., Pam Cummings of Columbus, Oh., Patty & Tom Smith of Cibolo, Tx., and Ricky Cummings, and his companion, Sandie Kappes of Urbana; six grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Elna Crawford; and two brothers, Lydle "Bill" Mowrey and Marlin Mowrey

Visitation will be from 11 a.m., Saturday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, until Eastern Star services at 12 noon, followed by family eulogies.

She will be laid to rest alongside her husband at the Kane Cemetery.
