Donald “Don” Wayne Schmidt, 61, passed away unexpectedly at 9:37 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at OSF St. Anthony’s Healthcare Center in Alton. Born January 14, 1963 in St. Louis, MO, he was the son of Albina M. (Hamernik) Schmidt of O’Fallon, MO and the late Vernon P. Schmidt. Don was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey and worked for Enterprise in St. Louis, MO. On May 15, 1987 he married the former Laurie Davis at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. She survives. Don was a devoted family man who loved spending time with his grandkids. He enjoyed the weekends boating with his family. Along with his mother and wife, he is survived by three children, Mark Schmidt (Nicole) of Troy, IL, Steve Schmidt of Chicago, and Katie Pennell (Jordan) of Troy, IL, four grandchildren, Grace Schmidt, Luke Schmidt, Jane Pennell, and Will Pennell. Also surviving are two brothers, James Schmidt (Laure) of Punta Gorda, FL, and John Schmidt of O’Fallon, MO, and three sisters, Verna Wilson of O’Fallon, MO, Paula Ryno (Ken) of St. Peters, MO, and Marsha Hoffmann (Scott) of Foristell, MO, two sisters-in-law, Patty Kelly (Mark) of Godfrey, and Linda Rogers (Brian) of San Diego, CA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his father, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Gene Wilson and his in-laws, Laurin and Carolyn Davis. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2024 at Gent Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey.
