Catherine M. “Kate” Wheeler, 97, passed away at 4:47 am Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home.
She was born February 5, 1918 in Alton, Illinois, the daughter of Clarence and Caroline (Kirchhoff) Smith.
She married Vincent P. Wheeler on December 30, 1939 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. He preceded her in death on June 16, 1988.
Catherine was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton and enjoyed bingo, crocheting and board games. She was a member of the first graduating class of St. Mary’s School in Alton.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick & Marcia Wheeler of Godfrey and Michael & Barbara Wheeler of Godfrey; a son-in-law, William Lee of Alton, eight grandchildren, Michael Lee, Debbie Lee, Catherine “Trina” Harris, Billie Jo Lee, Patricia Rivera, Christopher Wheeler, Blake Wheeler, and Grace Wheeler; eight great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolynn M. Lee; four brothers, Paul, Leo, Albert and Joseph Smith and a sister, Marguerite Lencioni.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am Friday, March 20, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton.
Burial will follow at Godfrey Cemetery.
