Our world has become a darker place with the passing of our beautiful mother Betty L. Sowders,  who died on Monday January 19, 2015.

She was born on April 5, 1936 in East Alton, the sixth of nine children born to Leto and Tillie (Schulze) Iberg.

Betty graduated from East Alton-Wood River High School in 1954. On September 10, 1955 she married Rudolph “Rudy” Sowders Jr. at First Baptist Church in East Alton.  They were married 54 years until his death on May 4, 2010.  She worked part time as a bookkeeper at Lester Gentry’s Bookkeeping Service for 27 years, then worked as the office manager for Lockhaven Country Club and then as the bookkeeper for the family business, Turn 2 Collectibles.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Rudolph C. “Rick” & Susan Sowders III, John & Ellen Sowders, Lisa & Jeff Dublo, Donna Droste, Jerry & Donna Sowders, and Mark Sowders;  grandchildren and spouses, David Sowders, Melissa Dublo and Chris Winsel, Joshua Droste, Matthew and Victoria Sowders, Jeff and  Amanda Dublo, Steven and Michele Sowders, Katherine Sowders, Bethany and Dan Sanderson, Angela Sowders, Michael Dublo, Cole Sowders, Natalie Sowders, Logan Sowders,  Matt and Karin Witt, and “Honorary” grandsons, Casey and Kevin Cox; great-grandchildren,  Jenna and Grant Dublo, Jacob Winsel, Ashlyn and Claire Witt and Olivia Sowders; one sister and brother-in-law, Shirley Jean  and Michael Bandy; a sister-in-law, Elaine Iberg and a brother-in-law,  Jim and Nina Bizaillion, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Marcella Iberg, Wilma Bizaillion, Rose Ann Opper and brothers Herbert, Edward, Donald, and Leslie Iberg.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 pm Sunday, January 25, 2015 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton.

Memorial Services will be private and inurnment will be held at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery. 

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alton Area Animal Aid Association (5A’s).
