Josephine Kallal

JERSEYVILLE-  Josephine T. "Josie" Kallal, 95, died at 7:35 a.m., Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Jerseyville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.She was born in Carrollton on Feb. 14, 1919, the youngest and last surviving child of the late William & Elizabeth (Stoffer) Abeln.Josie was very active throughout her life, working in the restaurant business and later was the cook supervisor at Blu Fountain Manor for nearly 10 years.  After her retirement she worked at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Peter Donahue.  After moving back to Jerseyville she began caring for those unable to care for themselves.  When she retired at age 85, she was still active playing cards and dominoes with her friends.  She was faithful to her church, volunteering on several committees, and enjoyed her family and especially her grandchildren and friends, of which she had many.She married Sylvester Kallal in 1938 in Jerseyville and they were married for 32 years before his passing on Aug. 25, 1970.Surviving are her four children & their spouses, Arbedella "Arbie" Carrico of Jerseyville, Joann Lyles of St. Louis, Mo., Jacob "Jack" and Sharlene Kallal of Jerseyville, and Nadene & Duane Fink of Jerseyville; nine grandchildren; 17 Great Grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son in law, Neil Carrico; a grandson, Eric Springman; a great grandson, Greg Wood; a brother, John Abeln; and eight sisters, Mary Kirbach, Kate Abeln,  Anna Feldman, Christine Scribner, Elizabeth Weishaupt, Cecelia Kallal, Agnes Kirbach and Margaret Skinner.Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m, Sunday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where a Rosary will be recited at 1:30 p.m.A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Monday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow officiating.Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Fieldon.Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville or Masses.
