Billy Crews

Billy Vernon Crews, 84, passed away 9:18 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2014, peacefully, surrounded by his family at his residence.

Born in Wood River on April 21, 1930, he was the son of William Crews and Minnie (Hamilton) Crews-Gimmeson.

A U.S. Air Force veteran, he worked 30 years as a mold maker for Owens-IL Glass, then became an AFL-CIO Community Service Representative for the United Way.  He was later elected  President of the Riverbend Growth Association and served until he retired. 

He was a member of the Mold Makers Union and an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Rosewood Heights.

On April 10, 1954 in Wood River, he married the former Shirley Calvin.  She survives.

Surviving also are a daughter, Tracy (Tom) Scoggins of Rosewood Heights; son, Greg (Kathleen) Crews of Bethalto; four grandchildren, Jessica (Brent) Springer, Jacob Crews, Miranda Scoggins, Leland Scoggins; great grandchild, Kansas Scoggins; two sisters, Maxine Burns of Waynesville, MO, Norma (Floyd) Dean of Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; step-father, Frank Gimmeson; grandson, Zachary Crews; and two sisters, Ruth Dreisbach and Velma Hutte.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 am Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 10 N. Center St, East Alton, IL.  Rev. Daryl Fansler will officiate.

Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church.
