Billie Gray

Billie Burke Gray, 77, formerly of Alton, died at 5:50 a.m., Friday, September 6, 2013 at Des Peres Hospital in Des Peres, MO after a brief battle with cancer.

Billie was born in Athensville on July 7, 1936, one of five children born the late Roscoe & Sylvia (Barnard) McCauley.

She graduated from Jersey Community High School and continued her education at Blackburn College in Carlinville.

She married Carl Allen Gray on March 31, 1963 in Jerseyville and they made their home in Alton, raising for daughters and sharing in 33 years of marriage before his death in May, 1996.

Billie later moved to Jerseyville in 2004 where she developed many cherished friends and memories through her involvement with the local Royal Neighbors of America group.

Surviving are four daughters and their spouses, Penny Pohlman of Jerseyville; Joyce & Larry Yost of Prairie Du Rocher; Wanda & Jeff Street of Shipman; Shiela (Jon) Sander of Bunker Hill; 10 granchildren; and one great-grandson.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Billie was preceded in death by three sisters, Elaine, Alice and Maxine; and a brother Roscoe Jr.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 from 11 until time of services at 1 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Her son-in-law, Rev. Jon Sander will officiate.

Burial will immediately follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Royal Neighbors in honor of Billie’s passion and commitment to its cause, in care of the funeral home.

Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
