Norma Sholar

Norma Lee Sholar, 81, of Godfrey Illinois passed away, Saturday, March 2, 2013 at her home overlooking the Mississippi River with her family by her side.

She was born on February 29, 1932 in Alton, Illinois the daughter of Arthur Peter and Reba America (Edwards) Schelle. She married Dexter Atwood Sholar on December 23, 1950 at Scott Air Force Base chapel in Saint Clair County, Illinois, he survives.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two infant children, her sister, Nancy Westbrook, brother, Arthur Thomas Schelle , her parents-in- law Emit and Rutha Bell (Chadwick) Sholar, brothers-in-law Leon Little, Henry L. Sholar, Jud Sholar, Franklin Sholar, Monroe Anderson, J. B Shirley and sisters-in-law Teriece Shirley and Geneva Sholar.

She is survived by her sons Michael “Elwood” Sholar, Edward “Fast Eddie” Sholar, Richard “Hawk” Sholar, John (Shannon) Sholar, and daughters Katherine “Kat” (Mike) Brunaugh, Sandra “Sam” Rynders and Rhonda (Paul) Elmendorf. She is also survived by her sisters Barbara Little and Linda (Gary) Herron, sisters-in-law Peg Schelle and Maggie Anderson and brother,-in-law James Westbrook, grandchildren Michael Sholar Jr., Megan Sholar, Matthew Sholar (and their mother Michelle Sholar),  Amy Sholar, Edward “Eddie” (Trish) Sholar Jr., Maggie Sholar,  Katherine (Chris) Wilson, (and their mother Sarah Farley Woodman), Danielle (Mick) McCahill,  Richard Sholar Jr.(and his mother Christi Boss), John “Artie” (Laurie) Sholar Jr.,  Andrew Sholar, Judson Corby, (and his father James Corby), Trae Corby,  Jason (Nikki) Brunaugh, Jenna (Brad) Kaczmarski, Joseph Rynders, Lewis Rynders, Frances Rynders (and their father Christopher Rynders), Dylan Elmendorf, Maxwell Elmendorf, Dexter Elmendorf, 15 great grand children and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Norma graduated from Alton High School in 1949. She was a homemaker until 1974 and then owned and operated Fast Eddie's Fried Chicken in Alton until her retirement in 1998. She was generous, always had a kind word and never met a stranger. She was dedicated to her family and always made sure there was a hug and a comforting word. She enjoyed sharing her talent for baking and her crochet work will be treasured for many generations. Norma was loved and will be missed by all.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Saint Anthony’s Home Health Care, BJC Hospice and Mercy Hospital and memorials would be appreciated to them as well as Saint Mary’s Catholic School in Alton and the Saint Mary’s Church Saint Ann Altar Society.

Visitation will be from 4:p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday March 5, 2013 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton, Funeral services will be held at Saint Mary’s church at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday March 6, 2013 with Father Don Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Valhalla Cemetery in Godfrey with a luncheon immediately thereafter at Pete’s Banquet Hall in Godfrey, Illinois.
