Robert Kehr

Robert “Bob” R. Kehr, 86, passed away suddenly at 6:50 am on Monday, February 18, 2013 at home. 

He was born on February 6, 1927 in Bunker Hill, the son of the late Chester Charles and Viola Henrietta (Oldenettel) Kehr. 

He married Lydia M. Hueneger at Zion Lutheran Church in Bunker Hill on November 2, 1947.  She survives. 

Bob served his country in the U.S. Navy for 6 years during WWII and was on an LST in Italy, the U.S.S. Saratoga, and Bennington, then the U.S. Reserves for 18 years.  He was a city and rural mail carrier, working for the Bunker Hill and the Alton Post Office for 33 years, retiring in 1983.  He also drove a school bus for 13 years in Bunker Hill while he worked at the Post Office.  After his retirement, he worked as a security guard for Whelan Security Company for 8 years.  He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Cottage Hills where he served as an elder and while at Zion Lutheran in Bunker Hill he served as the financial secretary.  He enjoyed working on cars, taking care of his koi fish pond and building, he actually built three of his houses. 

 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Robert and Renée Kehr of Panama City, FL; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Paul Jennings of Columbia, IL; four grandchildren, Angela and her husband, Andrew Aden, Alexandra Kehr, Ben Moore and Chelsea Jennings; a great granddaughter, Emmie Camille Kehr; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Elaine and Wilbur Reinke of Rosewood Heights, Delores and Harvey Davis of Bunker Hill and Shirley Pomatto of Wilsonville, IL and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Elvera Ferraris and Leona Myers, a brother, Shirven “Sonny” Kehr and his aunt, Goldie Oldenettel. 

Visitation will be from 9:30 am to 11:30 am Friday, February 22, 2013 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Cottage Hills.  Funeral services will follow at 11:30 am with Pastor Matt Gehrke officiating.

 

Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with military rites.

Memorials may be made to Concordia Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the American Lung Association.
