John Wyant Kirkman Jr., 91, passed away at 9:45 am, Thursday, January 17, 2013 at his residence.
He was born in Mount Carmel, IL on April 28, 1921 the son of the late John Wyant and Callie J. (Sharp) Kirkman.
On June 11, 1944 he married Mary A. Everett in Mount Carmel, IL. She preceded him in death July 2006.
John was an electrician for the New York Central railroad and then became a purchasing agent for Pacific Press and Shear for 25 years. He served in the US Army Air Corp in Panama during WWII. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, in Alton and St. John’s the Baptist Episcopal Church in Mt. Carmel where he was treasurer for over 50 years. He also belonged to the Mt. Carmel VFW American Legion, Mt. Carmel BPOE and IBEW.
He is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Sheila and Jerry Watson of Pekin, IL and Nancy and David Elson of Godfrey; two grandsons, Aaron and Jacob Elson; two granddaughters, Callie Elson and Alissa Selburg; granddaughter-in-law, Julie Elson; six great grandchildren, Vivi Elson, Quinn Elson, Ben Elson, Lola Selburg, Abi Sholar and Ellie Elson; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Kirkman.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two grandsons, Benjamin Elson and Thomas Axley; one brother, Gordon Kirkman; and three sisters, Grace Storkman, Lavina Perkins and Lavern Leeds.
Visitation will be from 2 pm until service at 4 pm, Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, IL with Father David Boase officiating.
Visitation will be held at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Mt. Carmel from 10 am until service at 11 am on Monday, January 21, 2013 with Father Brant Hazlett officiating.
Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Carmel.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church ECW in Alton or St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Mt. Carmel.
