Joseph Moonier

Joseph F. Moonier, 86, died at 10:20 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2013 at his home. Born March 3, 1926 in Perryville, MO, he was the son of Vess and Genevieve (Moore) Moonier. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific on the USS Crenshaw.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton and the VFW Post 1308. He retired in 1990 as a lock man with the U.S. Corps of Engineers after 25 years of service. On October 18, 1975, he married the former Sally Born. She survives.

Also surviving is a daughter, Debra Pace of Orlando, FL, a son, Richard J. Moonier (Vonda) of Orlando, FL, three grandchildren, Ryan, Michele, and Meredith, two great grandchildren, Makayla and Mason, a sister, Sister Mary Genevieve Moonier of Los Altos Hills, CA, brothers and sisters-in-law, Helen Moonier of Overland Park, KS, Jim and Pat Born of Camden, TN, Bill and Ruth Bealor of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Louise Wilkinson and Carl Richards of Jacksonville, IL, Mary Alice Hamilton of Decatur, IL, and Margaret Born of Charleston, IL and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerome and Zeno Moonier, and a sister, Rita Sutterer.

Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. Father John Luong, OMV will officiate.

Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s School in Alton or St. Vincent Church in Perryville, MO.
