Aloys Heitzig

JERSEYVILLE- Aloys Carl Heitzig, 90, died peacefully at 4:05 a.m., Saturday, December 8, 2012 at the Jerseyville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center where he had been a resident for three weeks.

He was born on Jan. 17, 1922 on the family farm in Westwoods, near Fieldon, Il one of 10 children born to the late Joseph & Mary (Schmieder) Heitzig. Raised in a farming family, Aloys began farming on his own in 1944, and has resided on the same farm since 1945, where he and Mary Lou have raised their family of eight children. He also was gas distributor for Mobil Oil with Fleming Oil Company in Jerseyville for 43 years retiring in 1988.

In addition to his farming, Aloys loved to travel, fish, hunt, spend time in his garden, but was most happy when he was surrounded by his family, and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and was the currently the oldest living member of the Jerseyville Elks Lodge.

He married the former Mary Lou French on Sept. 23, 1944 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon and together they have shared the past 68 years together.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou Heitzig of Jerseyville; seven children & their spouses, Larry Heitzig, Max & Glenda Heitzig, Connie Blackorby, Danny & Amy Heitzig, Luann Breitweiser, Jan & Wes Foiles and Craig & Jill Heitzig all of Jerseyville; 17 Grandchildren; 19 Great Grandchildren; and two sisters, Leona Green and Mary Margaret Nowak both of Jerseyville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Roberta Watson who was killed in an automobile accident on July 2, 1978; two sons in law, John Breitweiser & Sloke Blackorby; five brothers, Joseph, Bernard, Vincent, Cletus and Henry Heitzig; and two sisters, Mary Heitzig & Katherine Heitzig.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where a Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m., and the Knights of Columbus will have a 4th Degree Chalice presentation at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville.

Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville.
