James D. “Jim” Handley passed from this life Friday Sept. 28th at 8:28 AM due to a recent illness.
 
He was born July 19, 1939 in Carmi, Illinois to Frank and Maymie (Shipley) Handley. He married Roxanne Gassaway in 1967. She survives.
 
Jim served in the US Army from 1957 to 1950 where he was stationed in Germany. In 1960, on returning, he entered SIU Carbondale where he first started working for the Alton Box Board Corporation, as a Co-Op student. He came to Alton in 1963 to work for Alton Boxboard. He fell in love with the Alton Area and his company. He and Roxanne never left. He retired as Corporate Credit Officer for Smurfit-Stone in 2004.
 
He not only loved people, but also loved golf and horse racing.

 
Jim was involved in numerous organizations including, the National Association Credit Management, the National Paper Packaging Assoc., Saint Louis Credit Assoc., the Local Boy Scout Counsel where he was the President of the Boy Scouts for 3 years and was recognized by the Scouts with the prestigious Silver Beaver Award, former President of the United Way, active with Head Start Visiting Nurse Assoc., Member of the Growth Assoc., Alton Godfrey Nature League, Lockhaven Country Club, Alton Memorial Hospital Health Service Board, and the Alton Memorial Hospital Board and various other organizations.
 
If you wish to remember Jim, please do so through a charity of your choice. There will be a private burial.
