Garland W. Fields, age 68, went to be with the Lord at 6:34 pm on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton, with his family by his side.
He was born on June 17, 1943 in San Diego CA, son of Preston & Gertrude (Brown) Fields.
Garland attended Walter L. Cohen High School in New Orleans, LA, graduating in 1962. He continued his education at Grambling University, receiving his bachelors degree in education and then attended the University of Illinois, receiving his master degree. He taught in the Alton School District for 34 years, retiring in 2004. He then substituted in Alton and East Alton for many years. He was a member of Grace Untied Church in Alton.
He married Letha (Archer) Fields in Monroe, LA in 1968, she preceded him in death in 2006. Together they had a daughter India Fields of U City MO. He then married Patricia (Yavorski) Fields of Alton, IL on February 14, 1987, who survives in Alton. Together they had two daughters, Ashley and Jennifer Fields both of Alton. He then married Susan Carol (Dick) Fields on November 4, 2000 at Grace United Methodist Church in Alton. He leaves behind three daughters and his three grandchildren, Tristian, Darrian and Sanaa; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lorene Lee-Grandpre of New Orleans, LA, Barbara & Burel Dejoie of Jefferson, LA and Kathleen & Billy Tucker of Picayune, MS; many cousins, nieces, nephews and good friends.
He is preceded in death by, his parents; two wives and a brother-in-law, Roy J. Grandpre.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Friday, January 27, 2012 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be held at 10 am Saturday, January 28, 2012 with Rev. Charles Schwaab officiating.
Burial will follow at Upper Alton Cemetery.
