Jack Lee Atkins, 73, died at 8:58 a.m. Friday, December 16, 2011 at Alton Rehab and Nursing.
Born June 23, 1938 in Puryear, Tennessee, he was the son of Edward A. and Mildred (Jones) Atkins. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Ranger for four years and was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church. He worked for Owens Illinois Glass until they closed and later retired from the State of Illinois in the Collinsville office.
On August 18, 1962 in Alton, he married the former Nancy Coombs. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Candy and Tom Schiersing of Bristol, Indiana, and Rebecca and Dale Kessinger of Alton, a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Chris Atkins of Alton, eight grandchildren, Christy, Jerry, Aaron, Amanda, Dakota, Shyan, Justin, and Tyler, two great grandchildren, Amare and Arianna, and three sisters, Fawn Morgan of Godfrey, Bonnie Swearingin of McLeansboro, IL, and Imogene Dillow of Yorkville, IL.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2011 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Per his wishes, cremation will follow visitation.
