Thomas Wayne “Pop” Jernigan, age 86, passed away at 11:57 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2011 at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon, IL.
He was born in Golden City, MO on December 2, 2011, son of the late, and J. T. & Ruby (Stephenson) Jernigan.
He married Nettie Ellen (Huddleston) on May 28, 1959 in Miami, OK. She survives.
Wayne served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was employed by the Department of Justice in the Prison Service for 20 years, becoming a supervisor and retiring in 1986. Wayne and his wife Ellen were long time residence of Springfield MO, attending the South Street Christian Church and belonging to the Masonic Blue Lodge and Shrine. He enjoyed oil painting, fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends. He was a good man and will be sadly missed.
He is survived by his wife Ellen; four sons and their spouses, Michael & Sue Jernigan of Nixa, MO, Scott Jernigan of Springfield, MO, Wm D. & Jan Willis of Milner, GA and Jarrett Keith & Cathy Willis of Edwardsville; seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Lee Jernigan in August of 2009 and a brother, Warren Jernigan.
Visitation will be from 5 until time of service at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, December 5, 2011at
Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Pastor Mark Hofferber of Zion Lutheran Church and School of Bethalto will officiate.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, MO with Pastor Janet Given officiating.
