Oliver Buettner, 85, passed away at 12:50pm, Monday November 7, 2011 at Alton Rehab and Nursing Home.
He was born in Alton, Illinois on January 19, 1926 the son of the late Arthur and Laura (Baebler) Buettner.
On August 24, 1951, he married Nancy Powell in Pocahontas, AR. She Survives.
Oliver served his country in the US Navy during WWII and in the US Marines during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the East Alton 1st United Methodist Church for many years. He enjoyed gardening, especially roses. He also enjoyed traveling; visiting every state in the United States, as well as Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and her spouse, Nancy and Gary Hawkins, of West Alton; two sons and their wives, John and Lisa Buettner of Fresno CA, and Mark and Heather Buettner of Alton; and five grandchildren, Kyle Hawkins, John, Zachary Buettner, Jackie, and Maddy Buettner.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Vernon Buettner; and one sister, Ruth Ridenhower.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4 pm to 8 pm Wednesday November 9, 2011 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, IL.
Funeral service will be at 1 pm Thursday November 10, 2011 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, with Rev. Dan Powers officiating. Military Rites will be accorded by Alton VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.
Burial will follow at Upper Alton Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to 1st United Methodist Church of East Alton.
