Valera “Val” Whyte, 91, died at 8:39 a.m. Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Blu-Fountain Manor in Godfrey.  Born January 4, 1920 in Pike County, IL, she was the daughter of C. Otto and Margaret Elizabeth (Crader) Schlieper.  She was a member of East Maple Street Church of Christ in Hartford.  She had worked for Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey since 1966.  On March 28, 1947, in Hartford, she married Stewart Whyte.  He preceded her in death on July 1, 1971.  Surviving is a son, Roger Whyte and his wife Juanita of Mission Viejo, CA, a daughter, Cay Suhling of Godfrey, five grandchildren, Ryan, Trevor, Brandon, and Haley Whyte, and Adam Suhling, one great grandson, Thomas L. Suhling, and three sisters, Betty Montgomery of Wood River, Pat Schiber of Hartford, and Marje Turnquist of Des Moines, Iowa.  She was preceded in death by a grandson, Thomas M. Suhling and one brother, E. Jerome Schlieper.  Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until time of funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.  Steve Campbell will officiate.  Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.  Memorials may be made to East Maple Street Church of Christ in Hartford.
