Harold Dean Rathgeb, age 89, passed away at 3:00 am Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Blu-Fountain Manor in Godfrey with his family by his side.
He was born on May 17, 1921 in Alton, the son of the late Michael and Florence Mae (Rhoades) Rathgeb.
Harold married Ora Nell Eanes on May 1, 1946 in Leaksville, N. Carolina, she survives.
He served in the U.S. Army in Italy. He was a supervisor at Laclede Steel Company in Alton for over 37 years. He was an active member of the Upper Alton Baptist Church for over 50 years, where he served as custodian for 15 years after his retirement. He loved baseball but his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter and her spouse; Amy and Steve Klein of Godfrey, four sons and their spouses; Ronald and Jody Rathgeb of Jasper, GA, Timothy and Victoria Rathgeb of Godfrey, Richard and Barbara Rathgeb of Godfrey, and Daryl and Ann Rathgeb of Alton, one brother; Therold Rathgeb of Fort Lauderdale, FL, twelve grandchildren; Sean Rathgeb, Aaron Rathgeb, Craig Rathgeb, Brook Indof, Blake Indof, Sarah Jones, Elizabeth Holloway, Brent Rathgeb, Daryl Rathgeb Jr., Alex Rathgeb, Douglas Klein, and Neal Klein, thirteen great-grandchildren; Austin and Haley Rathgeb, Helen, Kathrine and Molly Rathgeb, Spencer and Myles Marfell, Jordan Jones, Evan and Grace Rathgeb, Wil and Jenna Holloway, and Adam Rathgeb.
Harold was preceded in death by; his parents, a son; Harold Rathgeb Jr., one brother; Joseph Rathgeb, and one sister; Florence Poe.
Visitation will be from 12 to 3 pm Sunday, May 15, 2011 at the Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be held at 10 am Monday May 16, 2011 with Rev. Brad Donoho officiating.
Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Military Rites will be conducted by Alton VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.
