Maitland Timmermiere

Maitland A. Timmermiere, 95, was born in the family home on Salu Street in Upper Alton, IL on April 21, 1915 to August H. Timmermiere, a shoe cobbler, and his wife, Maybelle (Grevelle Timmermiere. He passed on Friday, March 25, 2011 in Springfield, MO.

He is survived by nieces, Jo(Griesbaum) Greenwood, Carol (Misegades) Clark, and Peggy (Misegades) Blair; nephews, Henry Eaton and Richard Byassee; great nieces and nephews and a friend, Margaret Kiritu.

Maitland graduated from Alton, IL schools, honorably served in the U.S. Navy in World War II from 1942 – 1945, and was employed as a Master Patternmaker by Owens-Illinois Glass Works for 45 years, retiring in 1980.

In December 1944 Maitland married Irene Misegades in Alton at College Avenue Presbyterian Church; together they made a home on Edwards Street and were very active in the Alton and Madison County Historical Societies until Irene’s passing in January 1991.

In 1946 Maitland was elected Alderman, serving the City of Alton for almost 40 years, serving as Mayor Pro-Tem and Chairman of the finance committee.  He was instrumental in the planning of the Homer Adams Parkway, involved in developing Gordon Moore Park and promoted the SIU Dental School.  He also served on the boards of the SIU-E Library and the Alton Salvation Army.  He was a member of College Avenue Presbyterian Church. 

In 1992 Maitland married Louise Prewitt and relocated to Springfield, MO.  She died in September 2009.  He was also preceded in death by a brother, Grevelle.

Maitland lived a healthy full life.  He enjoyed living in his own home and caring for his flowers, reading history books, and staying abreast of the City of Alton, its government, and its residents.

April 21, 2010 was proclaimed Mailtland A. Timmermiere Day in the City of Alton by Tom Hoechst, Mayor, who encouraged citizens to congratulate Maitland for his tireless dedication and commitment to the education, history and government of the city.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton.  A graveside service will be held at Upper Alton Cemetery at 11:00 am Wednesday, March 30, 2011 with Pastor Janet Riley officiating with full military honors.
