Dorothy Marie Stumpe, a longtime resident of Alton, Illinois, died on February 12, 2011, of complications from Parkinson’s Disease.
She was born on November 9, 1931, in Bremen, Illinois, to Henry and Marie (Schnoeker) Wilson. After graduating from Chester (Illinois) High School, she married Roger W. Stumpe on April 11, 1952.
Mrs. Stumpe worked as the secretary to the Alton Park and Recreation Commission for more than 25 years, first at the Rock Springs office and then at the Haskell Park office. She enjoyed helping Alton families sign up for park events and helped enroll thousands of youngsters on Little League and soccer teams. She was particularly proud to assist in the development of Moore Park.
After retirement, she traveled the world with her friends, including trips to Europe, Australia, and Africa. She was an avid gardener and walker.
Mrs. Stumpe was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and, since its closure, St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
She is survived by her daughter Karen (Scott Bell) of Peoria, Illinois; her sons Michael of Alton and Joseph (Carrie Rengers) of Wichita, Kansas; two granddaughters, Sarah and Lauren Bell, both students at University of Illinois-Champaign and her sister, Vera (Lee) Bergfeld.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 15, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home, 1313 Delmar Street, Godfrey, Illinois. Services will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, February 16, at 10:00 am, with interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Godfrey.
