Rachel Faries, age 83, passed away at 11:25 p.m. Sunday, February 6, 2011, at Eunice Smith Nursing Home, in Alton.
She was born on August 6, 1926, in Shonia, MO to the late Robert and Ida (Tune) Shipton.
She married Durward Faries June 16, 1942 in Wayne County, MO he preceded her in death on February 16, 2006.
She earned her PhD at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO and was a chairperson and also taught creative writing for the Alton Community School District #11 for over 30 years at Alton High School. Rachel was a member of the Modern Language Association, Order of the Eastern Star and the Poet Society. She loved to Read, Travel and had a passion for everything she did in life.
One son and his spouse; Durward and Tarry Faries, Jr of Las Vegas, Nevada, survive Rachel.
She was preceded in death by parents, husband and one sister Blanche Allen and one brother Robert Shipton.
Visitation will be Friday, February 11, 2011 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey with a service at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Heil officiating. A second visitation will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at 2 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church in Wappapello, MO, with Pastor Dean Medlin officiating. Burial will follow at Wappapello Cemetery in Wappapello, MO.
