Pauline R. Mathis Schelle, 91, passed away at 10:56 p.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at home. Born June 19, 1919 in Macoupin County, she was a daughter of Adolph and Susie (Slagle) Best. An employee at Wood River Township Hospital, she enjoyed memberships at the Wood River Moose Lodge, the Wood River VFW Post 2859, and the Wood River American Legion.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William and Mayme Mathis of Godfrey; a daughter, Gayle Mathis and her special friend, Kathryn Zellich of St. Louis; 7 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Sammy Mathis; her second husband Robert Schelle; her sister, Melba Hudson; and her brother, Roy Best.
Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 14 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights from 1 p.m. until services begin at 2 p.m. Rev. Daryl Fansler will officiate.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
