Charles M. Shrum, 82, died at 1:05 p.m. Sunday, January 9, 2011 at his home in Godfrey. 

Born May 10, 1928 in East Alton, he was the son of Charles E. and Mildred (Farmer) Shrum.  He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Alton.  He retired as a maintenance supervisor from A.O. Smith in Granite City after 17 years of service.  On June 21, 1947 in Alton, he married the former Dorothy Ann Varga.  She preceded him in death on July 25, 2005. 

Surviving is a dear friend, Wilma Powles of Godfrey, five God children, Alyssa Ehlers of Bunker Hill, Jessica Winn of Alton, Ashley Duncan of Jerseyville, Jarren Ehlers of Bunker Hill, and Carmen Ehlers of Bunker Hill, one sister, Joyce Robinette and her husband Ralph of Bethalto and loving close friends.  He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Daniel Shrum, and a God child, Renee Duncan. 

Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday.  Reverend Andre’ Dobson will officiate. 

Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308. 

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.
