Lavern Hendy

Lavern Franklin Hendy, 82, died at 12:34 p.m., Sunday, December 12, 2010 at his residence.


He was born in Alton on May 17, 1928, the last surviving of three children born to the late Daniel & Dora (Kimberlin) Hendy.


Lavern grew up in Alton, and graduated in 1945 from Alton Senior High School.  He entered the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War.  He returned home, and began working for the United States Postal Service retiring in 1984 as a mail handler in the downtown St. Louis office.


He married the former June N. Vanady on March 3, 1951 in St. Louis, Mo., and she died Dec. 15, 1982.
Surviving are three children, Dean Hendy & Brian Hendy both of Jerseyville, and Lynn Campbell of Lutz, Fl.; six grandchildren; and his best friend since childhood, Bernard Price of Alton.


In addition to his parents and wife, Lavern was preceded in death by two daughters, Carla Hendy & Elaine Hendy; a sister, June Baker; and a brother, Daniel Hendy.


Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville where a rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m.


A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow officiating.


Burial will be in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military rites.


Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools.
