Stanley Rowden

Alton | Save

Stanley Pershing "Stan" Rowden, 92, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Monday morning, December 13th at 5:45 a.m. at the Rosewood Care Center.

Born in Fieldon, IL, September 18, 1918, he was the son of Clarence and Rhoda (Miller) Rowden.  On June 27, 1942, he married Ella Bernice Doerr in Alton and they enjoyed 68 years of married life.  He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Army Battery A 743 FA in the Rhineland Campaign in Central Europe. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, stamp and coin collecting, storytelling, and relaxing with friends and family.  Occupationally, he pursued many of his interests in his long life and was a member of the IBEW and the United Steelworkers of America, AFL-CIO.  Stanley and his wife Bernice have been members of 12th Street Presbyterian Church for fifty five years.  Thirteen years ago, he became a Mason and was proud of his membership in the Franklin Lodge, #25.  A raconteur, he always greeted you with a firm handshake, a warm grin, and an old joke.  He was preceded in death by his oldest daughter Barbara Sherwood, his eleven siblings, and his parents.

Survivors include his wife and two daughters; Judith Kermit of Saint Louis Park, MN and Elizabeth Jankowski of Godfrey, IL and her husband Stephen Jankowski.  He is also survived by four married grandchildren and three, almost four, great-grandchildren: Melissa and David Guano of Brooklyn NY, Alison Kermit and Joshua Feinberg of Saint Louis Park MN, Benjamin and Gwen Jankowski of Chicago IL, and Natasha Jankowski and Erik Chapman of Champagne, IL.  His great-grandchildren are Holly Guion of Brooklyn NY and Zachary and Zoë Feinberg of Saint Louis Park, MN.

The family requests that instead of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of your choice.

Visitation is Friday night, December 17, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.  A memorial service will be held at Gent on Saturday, December 18 at 11:00 a.m. to be followed immediately by internment at Valhalla Cemetery in Godfrey.
