Dale Daugherty

Dale D. Daugherty, 85, died suddenly at 7:12 p.m., Tuesday, November 9, 2010 in the emergency room at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville.


He was born on April 25, 1925 in Elm Grove, WV., and was the last surviving of the four children born to the late Cecil & Lillie (Winters) Daugherty. Dale graduated from West Liberty State College in West Virginia, and obtained his Masters Degree from the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.  He married the former Zona  M. Craig on June 12, 1947 in Roneys Point, WV., and moved to Jerseyville, in 1951 where he began his long career in education, and she became a registered nurse in the Jerseyville area.  A longtime educator, Dale began his career in Jersey County at East Elementary and served as an assistant football coach and head baseball coach at Jersey Community High School.  He served as principal throughout the years at Delhi, Dow, Grafton and Fieldon Elementary schools, and retired as the assitant principal at Illini Junior High School in 1978.  After his retirement, he became a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchisee, owning stores in Hillsboro, Bethalto, and Jerseyville, retiring from that in 1995, as well as obtaining the name "Grandpa Chicken" from his grandchildren.


He and Zona were charter members of the Westlake Country Club, as well as active and loyal members of the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville, where Dale has served as a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Church Choir, and participated in the Mens Fellowship.


Dale & Zona were blessed with nearly 60 years together and a family that began with four children and later blessed with grandchildren, before her death on March 18, 2007.


On Jan. 11, 2008, Dale again was blessed, as he married Lucille Lewis at the First United Methodist Church and their time together has been blessed with happiness.


Surviving are three daughters & a son in law, Terry Maupin of Arvada, Co., Rebecca & Rodger Jennings of Alton, and Beth Ann Davis of Jerseyville; a son & daughter in law, Timothy & Patti Daugherty of Canton, IL; eight grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three great grandchildren; eight great grandchildren;  a step son & his wife, Gary & Donna Lewis, along with their two children of Brighton.
In addition to his parents, and wife, Zona, Dale was preceded in death by a son in law, John Davis on Aug. 5, 2000, a granddaughter, Jennifer Ann (Davis) Cundiff of Oct. 9, 2008; a great granddaughter, Madison Ann Cundiff on May 7, 2004; a sister, Wilda McCracken; and two brothers, Norval & Eugene Daugherty.


Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville, with Revs. Mark Myers and Dennis Hill officiating.


Burial will take place in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, and the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 will conduct military graveside rites in honor of Dales service with the U.S. Marines during World War II, where he was the recipient of the Purple Heart.


Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or to the American Cancer Society.
