Edward Meehan

Edward Michael Meehan, 88, passed away, 10:01 p.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Born October 17, 1926 in East St. Louis, he was the son of Edward M. and Helen E. (Dissett) Meehan.

Life-long member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church (now Holy Angels Parish) in Wood River, IL

Graduated from high school early to serve in the U.S. Army in the Philippines in the final days of WWII.

Employed for 5 years at The Sporting News in St. Louis, in the advertising production department. He retired in 1982 after 30 years with Owens Illinois Glass Co., Service Department Alton, IL.

A Charter member of the Bonsai Society of Greater St. Louis. He attended the First International World Bonsai Convention in 1989 in Tokyo, Japan; enjoyed the hobby so much that in the 1970’s with help from wife Jean started their own business as Meehan’s Bonsai Supply.

He was a member of Wood River Eagles #2773 Aerie, since 2004.

Edward is survived by wife of 36 years, Mary Imogene (Jean) (Johnston Young).

Surviving also are a daughter Kathryn (Warren) Holm; three sons James Edward (Sue Ann) Meehan, Christopher Meehan and Michael (Bob McMurphy) Meehan; stepchildren Philip (Grace [d2005]) Young, Catherine (Michael) Heaberlin, Carol Young, James (Janet) Young and Rose Young;

grandchildren, Amanda Meehan, Sarah (Adam) Felling, Jeannette (Blaine) McElroy, Christopher and Reneé Young, Alanna Barrie, Andrew (Rhonda) Young, Danielle Norgaard; great grandchildren, Anthony Barrie, Stephanie and Jason Kinner, Charlotte and Collin Young, Sydney Wallace, Daisy Jane Felling; great-great grandchildren, Jacobi, Xander and Gabriel Kinner.

Preceded in death by his parents; his sister Mary Maureen Schudel; a brother James Walter Meehan; and a stepson David Young.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.

Services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, October 3 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Wood River. Father James Flach will officiate.

Burial will be in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.


Memorials may be made to Marquette Catholic High School.
