House Passes Healthcare Reform Legislation

The U.S. House has approved historic, sweeping healthcare reform legislation. On a vote of 219-212, the House agreed to the Senate healthcare reform bill that was passed late last year. Democrat Jerry Costello of Belleville voted in favor of the measure, as did Congressman Phil Hare. Republican John Shimkus of Collinsville voted against it, as did all Republican members. At least two more local public school districts are looking at layoffs to balance their books for the coming school year. The Roxana School Board issued layoff notices to 11 teachers, nearly 20 non-certified staff members and an assistant principal this week. State Rep. Dan Beiser opposes Gov. Pat Quinn's proposal to cut money to local governments by one-third. That would reduce the portion of income tax that each municipality receives by about $23.10 per person according to the Illinois Municipal League. That means the City of Alton would see a decrease of more than $700,000; Godfrey $380,000; Wood River $260,000 and Bethalto $149,000.[Full Story] [1 Comments]

Police are still looking for a man who allegedly approached several students in the Granite City School District asking if they wanted a ride last week. In both cases the students who were approached said no and kept walking and the man drove away. Sheriff Warns of Scammers

The Madison County Sheriff's Department is warning consumers to be wary of people who claim to be remodelers, home repair specialists or handymen, or those who may be trying to bilk consumers using other methods. Few Clues In Roodhouse Murder

Police are looking for clues to help determine who killed a 72-year-old woman in a tiny Greene County town last Friday. Police say Carol Andrews was found dead in her Roodhouse home Friday night. Wood River Police were holding 38 year old Timothy Samuels of the 300 block of Admiral in Alton, for DUI. 39 year old Dennis Buck of the 900 block of Wood River Avenue in Wood River, on two outstanding warrants. 44 year old Michael Johns of the 200 block of Avalon in Wood River for domestic battery and interfering with the reporting of domestic battery.[Full Story] [Post Comment]
Iconic St. Louis Riverboat Destroyed In Fire

Authorities are looking into what caused the famous Lieutenant Robert E. Lee riverboat to catch fire yesterday afternoon. No one was aboard during the fire and no injuries were noted. Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan is sponsoring legislation to create a small business tax credit, proposed by Gov. Pat Quinn. The bill unanimously passed the Revenue and Finance Committee.
