Alton High School's Interact Club is sponsoring a fundraiser next Friday, November 13 to help raise money for childhood cancer research. The St. Baldrick's foundation raises money primarily through head-shaving events. Volunteers, sponsored by family, friends and employers, go bald in solidarity with kids who typically lose their hair during cancer treatment, and Z-1570's Doug Jenkins will be one of the shavees at this event.[Full Story] [Post Comment]

Dwight Kay of Glen Carbon- Vice President of Cassens Transport in Edwardsville- has announced his candidacy for Illinois' 112th district state representative seat. Running as a Republican, Kay says "Our state government is broken and our current leadership doesn't have the courage to fix it." Kay says with a focus on bringing jobs to the area, balancing the state's budget and spending, and promoting transparency in government, he will bring "trusted leadership for our region." November Students of the Month

The Alton/Godfrey Rotary Club Students of the Month for November are Daniel Parham of Alton High School and Zachary Eggering of Marquette Catholic High School. Students selected for this honor are recognized and presented with an award at a Rotary Club meeting and will be eligible to compete for a $5000 scholarship which will be presented to one of the eighteen students honored as a "Student of the Month" during the school year. This is the 12th year of the program and since the program started 203 students have been honored from the three area high schools.[Full Story] [Post Comment]

The state’s $35 billion capital program has barely gotten off the ground because of the same complaint found in every corner of state government: Not enough money. State lawmakers have approved the use of $100 million in Road Fund money to give state government at least some of the money it needs to start selling bonds for the jobs program, and unions have been getting antsy about when the construction jobs would start. Alton Police had the following people in custody this morning. 23-year-old Jared McCollum of the 200 block of W. 19th St. in Alton was arrested for D.U.I. 29-year-old Robert Robinson of the 2800 block of Brown St. in Alton was arrested for retail theft. State To Pick-Up 50 New State Police Cars

After coping with squad cars well past their prime in recent years, the Illinois State Police is finally getting some new additions to its fleet. The State Police will get 50 new vehicles by the end of this year, with more to come through next summer. Dock owners at the Lake of the Ozarks and any lake managed in Missouri by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers will have to deal with a new law concerning 911 beginning in January. On January 1st, a new state law goes into effect, requiring dock owners on Missouri lakes to post the closest emergency address for their dock. [Full Story] [Post Comment]

Shooting Spree at Army Base

Thirteen people were killed in a bloody shooting allegedly carried out by a soldier at Fort Hood, Texas. More than 30 more people were wounded. Lieutenant General Bob Cone told reporters the shooter opened fire at a soldier readiness facility, which provides last-minute checkups for soldiers who are about to deploy.
