Sixty-six kids from around Illinois, including five from Alton, are taking part in this year’s Team Illinois Youth Camp at Principia College. The youth are participating in a number of activities led by police from the local to the state level, and the National Guard. It is a highly structured camp based on a military model of discipline.
This is the second year the college has hosted the program for disadvantaged and troubled youth, according to Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons.

The campers pitched in at a workday in Alton’s Rock Spring Park earlier this week. Simmons says the hope is to give these kids a positive outlook on life.
