The Winter Solstice is today (Saturday), and an Illinois historic site is gearing up to celebrate the event. Woodhenge will return to Cahokia Mounds again this year, giving visitors a look into how ancient civilizations viewed the solstice. Assistant site manager Bill Iseminger says the celebration will actually be held Sunday morning.
The event will include material about the discovery, form and Function of Woodhenge, but will not incorporate any rituals or ceremonies, out of respect for Native American culture and beliefs.
