A longtime area volunteer is being mourned by his friends and fellow volunteers. 78 year old Richard Gonzales of Godfrey died Tuesday following an accident at his niece's house. Today he is being remembered as a man who went above and beyond to help those that most needed it.
Gonzales volunteered with the Southwestern Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross beginning in 1995, and received the chapter's volunteer of the year award. He was also one of the first volunteers on the scene after the September 11 attack on the Pentagon. Al Bertram, Disaster Specialist with the Southwestern Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross, says Gonzales made a couple of trips to out nation's capital.
Gonzales would deploy at the drop of a hat, and was everything you could ask for in a volunteer, according to Bertram. Funeral arrangments are being handled by Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Visitation is tomorrow afternoon.
