The victim in a fatal accident in Jersey County on Sunday has been identified. Illinois State Police say 86-year-old Ralph Grizzle of Hardin was pronounced dead after the van he was driving struck the soybean head of a combine. The collision took place around 4:15pm Sunday on Route 16 near Reddish Road which is just west of Fieldon.
Grizzle was the lone occupant of the vehicle. ISP from District 18 out of Litchfield report the westbound van was driving into the sunshine and collided with the combine that was driving eastbound and taking up both lanes of travel. The combine driver is identified as 35-year-old Edward R. Phipps of Kane. Phipps was ticketed for overwidth – which means the combine was taking up more than the 8’6” allowed for one lane of traffic. While other traffic charges may be filed, he is not expected to face any criminal charges.
