Wood River Mayor Fred Ufert was laid to rest yesterday.  City officials, local residents, friends and family took time to honor the mayor at his funeral Mass at Holy Angels Catholic Church Monday morning, followed by a funeral procession through the city from the church to St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Alton.

Ladder trucks from fire departments from Glen Carbon and Maryville helped display a large American flag from the Godfrey Fire Protection District during the procession.  Ufert died unexpectedly last Wednesday of an abdominal aortic aneurysm.  He was 65.  Mayor Ufert took office in 2005, and before that had served on the Wood River City Council since 1999.  Ufert is survived by his wife Gale, four children, and five grandchildren.
