A woman from Metro East is facing felony theft charges for taking donations after telling people she had cancer. Troy police arrested 25-year-old Melissa D. Barton on Wednesday. She's also accused of collecting money to help pay for treatments for her son with leukemia. Authorities say she and her son are both healthy.
Barton has also used the names Melissa Dawn Pruett Barton and Missy Barton Pruett. This is an ongoing investigation, and anyone who thinks they may have been deceived by her is urged to call Troy Police at 618-667-6731. A Belleville woman was busted back in June after apparently engaging in a similar scheme.
