The sheepnose mussel and the long-eared bat are standing in the way of federal approval for the Illiana Expressway.  The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has raised concerns that the planned toll road between I-55 in Illinois and I-65 in Indiana would hurt the habitats of those critters and could damage the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in Illinois.

The lack of an environmental impact study will delay planning, land acquisition and fundraising for the one-point-five-billion-dollar project until at least next summer.
